Galatians 3:10b:&nbs= p; “…Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all the th= ings written in the book of the law to do them.”

 

Righteousness according to law does not call for some things done right.  It requires all things done right.=   Neither does it command sometimes = doing all things right, but continuing to do all things right.  Human beings have a serious problem.  The best among us mi= ght do all things right some of the time and some things right all of the time, but never all things right all the time.  The result is that as a race of sinners, we are cursed. 

 

In order to free us from the curse, the Lord had to do something more than simply forgive us. 

 

Galatians 3:13a:&nbs= p; “Christ has redeemed us out of the curse of the law”

 =

The word “redeemed” literally means “to buy out.”  In order to save us from the curse= , it was not free; it cost the Lord Jesus something.  What was the price?

 

Galatians 3:13b:&nbs= p; “having become a curse on our behalf, because it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone hanging on a tree.’”

 

He became what we were on the cross and received the judgment that we should have received.

 

Galatians 3:14a:&nbs= p; “In order that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Genti= les in Christ Jesus.”

 

The Lord became a curse for us for a purpose.  I= t was not only so that we could escape condemnation, but also that we could be blessed.  The curse goes away = in Christ and the blessing comes in Christ.&n= bsp;

 

Galatians 3:14b:  “that we might receive the p= romise of the Spirit through faith.”

 

What is the bles= sing and the promise?  Many have mistakenly thought it to be all kinds of things both heavenly (such as goin= g to heaven, which is never spelled out as a promise in relation to believing in Jesus) and earthly (such as prosperity, health, and success, which things we are told that we might lose as we follow Christ—Matt. 16:24-26; Acts 14:22; Heb. 13:5; Phil. 1:29; 2:27, 30; 4:11-12).  But the greatest blessing that God= could ever give anyone is Himself as the Spirit.=  

 

CURSE:  = (katara) An utterance designed to bring harm by supernatural operation (Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, Kittle= , p. 75).

 =

BLESSING: = (eulogia)  Lit= erally means “a well speaking.” It is designed to bring benefit to the person it is placed upon.
